Legacy Tests / retired proposal

The former Ultimate Extreme.

This retired proposal is preserved for reference. It is not a current Toughest Alive standard. No submissions are accepted.

Former proposal: 20× bodyweight. 200 miles. 2,000 burpees.

Stage 01 / Strength

20×
bodyweight

Back squat. Bench press. Deadlift.

Reach a cumulative load of at least 20 times official bodyweight in as few successful reps as possible. Each lift contributes at least 4× bodyweight. Allocate the remaining 8× across any combination.

45-minute cap.

Stage 02 / Endurance

200
miles

The full distance. Strength earns a head start, never a shorter course. Walking and rest are part of elapsed time.

Every mile belongs to you.

Stage 03 / Resolve

2,000
burpees

After the full 200 miles, finish 2,000 burpees. The Ultimate Test is separate from Reckoning’s 100K and 620-burpee benchmark.

Finish the work.

The strength score

Fewer reps.
More runway.

  1. Fewest successful repetitions.
  2. Fastest strength completion time.
  3. Greater total load above 20× bodyweight, only if still tied.

Count load × successful reps for each lift, then add the three totals. Failed attempts add neither load nor successful reps; the clock keeps running. An athlete who does not meet the total and each lift’s minimum within 45 minutes has not completed Stage 1.

Every successful rep under 20 earns 10 minutes of head-start credit, capped at 120 minutes.

Successful repsRun head start
8120 minutes
9110 minutes
1280 minutes
1550 minutes
20+0 minutes

For a shared run release, the maximum-credit athlete starts first. Each other athlete waits the difference between 120 minutes and their earned credit. The eventual event handbook must confirm the shared release time and overall finish protocol before registration opens.

Strength earns position.
Endurance can erase it.
Burpees settle whatever is left.
Proposed movement and judging standards

These detailed standards are a draft for organizer approval before an official competition. The scoring above belongs only to this retired proposal.

Official bodyweight & load

Use a witnessed weigh-in and one unit throughout. Include the bar and plates. Record each successful rep and load. The strength clock begins on the start signal and includes changes, rest and failed attempts. Completion is the first successful rep that satisfies all load requirements. No extra reps after completion to improve the tie-break.

Back squat

Stand fully extended with the bar on the back. Descend until the hip crease passes below the top of the knee, then return to full standing. No assistance. Use appropriate safeties and spotters.

Bench press

Begin with extended elbows. Lower to a controlled chest touch, pause visibly, and press to full lockout with the shoulders and buttocks on the bench. No bouncing or spotter assistance.

Deadlift

Lift from a stationary floor position to locked knees and hips, shoulders upright. Return under control. No straps or hitching; each rep begins from a dead stop. Conventional or sumo stance is acceptable in this draft.

Burpees

Chest and thighs touch the ground; return to standing and jump with both feet clear, hips extended and hands meeting overhead. Step-back and step-up are allowed. Count at the completed jump.

Event handbook still to confirm

Weigh-in timing, judging commands, equipment, measured run course, aid and pacing rules, stage transitions, overall cutoffs and final race timing will be published before an official event. There is no current world-title claim, prize promise or open registration.

This is an extreme aspirational standard, not a beginner workout. Build experience through the Levels and appropriate training.
